FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Background on the Development

What is the background on this development?

Transbay Block 2 is the future site of two 100% affordable housing communities, one for seniors and one for families. Block 2 is located in the Transbay Redevelopment Area of downtown San Francisco, roughly at the site of the former Greyhound Bus Station on the former temporary Transbay Terminal. The Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII) released a Request for Proposals for the redevelopment of the site in July 2020, and selected the team of Mercy Housing California and Chinatown CDC in November 2020.

What is currently happening at the site?

Chinatown CDC has begun construction on Transbay Block 2 West. The Crossing at East Cut provides activities that include “indoor” soccer fields and pickleball, a dog park and playground, and food trucks and a beer garden, among others. You can find out more at https://www.eastcutcrossing.com/

Community-Serving Retail

Will there be community-serving retail?

We have heard from the community about the need for an affordable grocery store and other neighborhood-serving retail. As nonprofits, our goal is to create a vibrant mix of retail spaces that serves the needs of the community. We welcome your suggestions for retail priorities as we move further along in the planning process.

Management and Resident Services

How will the buildings be managed and secured?

Both buildings will have robust property management and maintenance staff to secure and maintain the buildings, as well as an onsite management apartment enabling staff to live in the building in case of after-hours emergencies. In addition to property operations and maintenance, both buildings will have additional staff on site to help connect residents to any services they may need and to create a sense of community through events and programming for both families and seniors.
